What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades. Each chip contains a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner at veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and animal control facilities.

Why Microchip Your Pet?

  • Permanent identification that can't be lost or removed like collars and tags
  • Significantly increases the chance of being reunited with a lost pet
  • Works for both dogs and cats
  • One-time procedure
  • Required by many pet insurance companies
  • Recognized nationwide and internationally
  • Can help prove ownership if your pet is stolen

The Procedure

Microchipping is a quick, simple procedure that can be done during a regular office visit:

  • Takes only a few seconds to implant
  • Similar to a routine vaccination
  • No anesthesia required
  • Minimal discomfort for your pet
  • Chip is biocompatible and safe
  • Lasts for your pet's entire lifetime

After Microchipping

We'll register your contact information with the microchip database. It's important to:

  • Keep your contact information up to date in the registry
  • Update your information if you move or change phone numbers
  • Still use a collar and ID tags in addition to the microchip

Important Statistics

According to studies, microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners compared to non-microchipped dogs. For cats, microchipped cats are more than 20 times more likely to be reunited with their families.
